Point Washington is about 8.2 miles from our office, roughly a 14-minute drive on N County Hwy 393, US 98 and CR 395. It sits on the southeast corner of Choctawhatchee Bay, north of 30A. Walton County's neighborhood plan calls it one of the county's oldest settlements and describes a mill town that grew around two sawmills.
The county's Point Washington Neighborhood Plan covers about 112 acres and 62 parcels, and 20 of those parcels have historic significance dating to the 1880s. Most are half-acre lots with single-family homes. Around that old core the housing is newer, and most homes nearby were built after 2000, so one street can hold a century-old cottage and a house with a current sectional door.
Wet weather is the local wear factor. NOAA's 1991-2020 normals show about 55 inches of rain a year, and DASMA, the garage door manufacturers' association, says rust shrinks the working wire of a spring and corrosion pits can start fatigue cracks.
